Dr. Amitava Biswas, MBBS (Vellore), MD (AIIMS), attended medical school at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, and completed MMBS in 1984.

He completed post graduate training in Ophthalmology at Dr. R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, in 1990. After that he joined Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, where he was mentored by Dr. S S Badrinath in various aspects of Ophthalmology. Dr. Biswas spent nearly five years with him, much of it as in-charge of the Dept of Community Ophthalmology before shifting to Kolkata in mid-1995. With ample guidance from Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Kolkata, he and his wife Neena set up Sunetra Family Eye Care Centre, a professional set-up managed by a board of Trustees. The centre has been growing ever since and offers a significant part of its services on a charitable basis to the indigent community. In 2009 Dr. Biswas spent a few weeks each for glaucoma update with Prof Bruce Shields at Yale Eye Centre, and with Prof George Spaeth at Wills Eye Hospital, both in USA.

Dr. Biswas takes special interest in glaucoma, phacoemulsification and community ophthalmology. He has presented several papers and orations at various national and international forums, and also has several publications in various peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals.

Dr. Debashis Das was Ex-convener of Community Ophthalmology Sub-Committee, Ophthalmic society of West Bengal in 2004-2006, Ex-Executive committee member, Uveitis Society of India in 2004-2006, Ex-Executive committee member and Ex-Convener, Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal 2008-2010.

He has presented many papers in State Conference, National Conference, International Conference and Medical Research Foundation Alumni Meeting. Presently he is Medical Director, Netra Ashram, Eye Foundation in Kolkata. He is the Editor of “Our Vision”, “ Anowaan” and “ Bengal ophthalmic journal”.

Dr Navin Jayakumar studied at Madras Medical College (1978-1984) and Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Chennai (DO 1986-1988), and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (FRCSEd 2001).

He trained in the super speciality of neuro-ophthalmology at renowned centres in USA including Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA (1993-1994) with luminaries like Dr Neil Miller, Dr Joel Glazer, and Prof William Hoyt. He joined Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai in 1991 and was Head of Department of Neuro-ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya (2002-2005). In 2005 he was invited by The Chinese University of Hong Kong to help establish a Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology. He was also designated Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at the Shantou Medical University, People’s Republic of China. During this period he also taught state-of-the-art cataract surgery aboard the Lifeline Express, a charitable eye hospital on wheels, in remote areas in China and was recognized by Hong Kong’s Action for Vision Foundation in 2006 for his work in alleviating cataract blindness there. Since 2008 he is also a visiting consultant at Vasan Eye Care Hospitals Chennai.

Dr Navin Jayakumar was the Asia co-coordinator for Neuro-ophthalmology Symposium for the 2008 World Ophthalmology Congress, and is the Asia coordinator for Neuro-ophthalmology for the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Meetings from 2009 till date. In 2010 January he became the first Indian to be invited to the Editorial Board of the premier scientific neuro-ophthalmology journal in the world - the Journal of Neuro-ophthalmology.
